Looks like someone's filled the gap up nicely. Nokia made superb smartphones featuring the symbian os. Sadly US telephone companies are so deluged with money from the huge market base that they don't have to care about the user experience.

There's something to be said for leaving the past alone. My memory of the things I did as a kid are glorified beyond compare, leaving all things natural and actual to the sidelines, or they are derided, ejected, and ignored.
